I had to do it...
Mar. 5th, 2004 09:47 amI just read this article
WHO THE FUCK DO THEY THINK THEY ARE???
Aren't you taught in church the golden rule? Treat everyone in the same manner that you want to be treated (roughly paraphrased).
Are we forgetting that marriage is a LEGAL binding of two people, and NOT a religious one? Are we forgetting that a justice of the peace can perform a marriage just as LEGALLY as a priest/minister/rabbi/whateverthefuck?
What gives these bible thumpers the RIGHT to DEMEAN a person for LOVING someone else? (yeah yeah...1st ammendment) Aren't these self proclaimed christians (read: catholics) taught to treat everyone equally and lovingly?
I may not be a church goer, but I was raised one. I was also raised by morals instilled in me by my parents (although some have worn off), the basic foundation of what my parents taught me are still there: treat EVERYONE with respect.
What the hell do people have to lost by allowing same sex marriages? Their rights are not being infringed upon. Their rights are not being taken away. Their benefits will not be changed at work. Insurance companies don't care if you're black, white, red, yellow, purple, green (well, maybe green...if you are, see a doctor), or any other shade. Insurance companies don't care if you're catholic, methodits, bhuddist, satanist, wiccan, pagan, whateverthefuck. They still get paid the same. Your doctor appointments will still cost them the same.
These couples are looking for the same thing that all of the heterosexual couples are looking for: happiness and love. They want to be loved by someone, and happy with taht someone. Why does it matter if that someone is male or female? Why does it matter to YOU that this person is gay, lesbian, transexual, or bisexual? What does that change for you? These people are still alive and walking this earth. They are still breathing the same air, eating the same foods, shopping at the same stores, eating at the same restaurants. You could be working with a homosexual and not even know it. You could be living next door to one. You own brother or sister could be one. YOU could be one.
This is not about me. This is not about any fear of losing my benefits. This is not about gays and lesbians changing the world around us because they choose to marry someone of the same sex. This is about equal rights. This is about allowing Americans to enjoy the FREEDOMS that our heros fought so bravely for.
I used to be "Proud to be an American"...
But I'm not so sure anymore.

Date: 2004-03-05 06:00 pm (UTC)First it was slavery, then interracial marriage, and now gay marriage.
HOmosexuality is not some new fad. It has been around for as long as recorded history. Even in the bible htere are mentions of same sex relationships.
I used to let these things really bother me because it does come down to saying that I am a second class citizen.
I have moved from that for the most part but it still hurts a bit when it comes right down to it.
