Sleep, oh how I miss you

Bottom line, there's something not right with my back. I'm fine during the day, but as soon as I go to sleep, things go wonky nuts. I wake up in the middle of the night with shooting pains in my lower back, to which I slowly change positions (if I can move), and hope for more sleep. I had gotten sick of this and went to the urgent care last Friday, as my current PCP is WAY too far away to justify traveling that far just to turn around and come back. The "doc" that saw me diagnosed it as a lower back strain and prescribed Vicodin and Flexeril (muscle relaxer). I've been taking these at night, mostly because they knock me out and allow me at least SOME sleep. Now instead of waking up at midnight or 1am, in pain, I'm sleeping until somewhere between 4 and 5.
You know the strangest part to this whole thing? I WOKE UP WITH IT. I don't recall doing anything to my back while I was awake, and I'm fine during the day as well! The ONLY time I have problems is at night. Granted, I've been trying really hard to take it easy as far as lifting things goes, as I can feel things being not right, but the sharp, intense pains only happen at night.
I DON'T GET IT! I just want to be able to sleep through the night and wake up without pain!
