A message everyone needs to heed

In my opinion, the current debate over Mitt Romney's talk about his religion is "much ado about nothing."
When we arrive at the pearly gates, we are going to be asked only one question: "What kind of life did you lead?" We aren't going to be asked what church we attended. God doesn't care whether we are Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Mormon, Buddhist, Hindu or whatever. These are just different paths to the same deity.
If Marx was right when he said that religion "is the opium of the people," then I suspect that some of us are overdosing.
Let's get back to the basics. Love one another and respect each other's fundamental beliefs.

Date: 2007-12-19 03:09 pm (UTC)well, the whole meaning behind Christmas has been so warped that i find it almost funny people still take offense to it.
hell, my JEWISH coworker's JEWISH grandmother sent her a CHRISTMAS card. silly? maybe...just proof that the Christian holiday has been warped in the minds of the public.
'course, then again, the Christians stole it from the pagans in the first place...but that's a whole other can of worms. :)

There is another saying I love, from a song "I hate Jesus freaks when they seem like they want to win."
I think they both say so much about the world we live in today. The more I look around, the more I see people in there late 20s early 30s that have looked beyond "GOD" and found other happiness and ways to find themselves... I LOVE IT. I stopped with the GOD "crap" at the the ripe old age of about 14... 14 going on 30 you could say. Anyway... just my thoughts.

Date: 2007-12-19 03:57 pm (UTC)I have used this argument with my mother in law (she's strict catholic, i'm a heathen) and her repsonse is always something akin to Matthew 7:21-23, no man can enter the kingdom of heaven on good deeds alone.
However, I have a hard time accepting any faith that basically says that you can do all the evil you want throughout your entire life, repent and be saved at the last hour, and still be entitled to the same afterlife as someone who actively strove to better the world and treat others with respect.
when someone says "Merry Christmas", it's not preaching a religion to you, as it's just their way of wishing you well.
I agree 150%. I wish people Merry Christmas as a gesture of good will drawing on MY OWN cultural background. It is not my onus to know the other person's cultural background. I would love for them to respond with an equally festive "Happy Chanukah!" or whatever form of season greeting they prefer... I would embrace a grumpy "bah humbug."
camper4lyfe -- I have nothing better to do.
LOL. I am SO glad I added you as a friend.
