Dec. 1st, 2006 11:10 amAm I the only one that, when listening to music, hears the music more than the lyrics, and then when someone uses the song for something you really haven't a clue what it's really about and when you say that you like the song, they get snotty with you because the song is about something totally off the wall and potentially offensive?

Date: 2006-12-01 05:41 pm (UTC)Your post just spawned the throught process.
When I hear a song, I hear the music and tune for it more than the actual words. It's actually quite difficult for me to hear the words in a song and put them together into an actual story that it's supposed to be.
So, I hear a song and think "I really like this song", then when I mention it to someone, they inform me that it's about cheating/killing someone/shaving a cat/etc. and I'm totally clueless about it.
Take for example "Follow Me" by Uncle Kracker. I REALLY like the melody and harmony of the song, but it's about cheating. It's like "this is a nice song, and I really like it, as long as I don't pay attention to the lyrics."
Does that make more sense?

absolutely!
I had a discussion with a friend yesterday about "Both Hands" by Ani Difranco. I've always heard it and felt it was a wistful song about looking back on how you tried your best in a relationship, but couldn't make it work, but accepting it and moving on.
They always saw it as intensely sad, a song about giving up all hope, about a lover taking their life.
Really different views, eh? I still like my version better, but i respect what they feel. Opinions and all that.
I'm a lyrics freak, though. It's from all the musical training and learning how to express myself. Blah-de-blah and that stuff.
