Mar. 12th, 2001 10:19 pmA recent study suggests that teenagers who smoke a pack or more of cigarettes a day are more prone to anxiety disorders as young adults. The study also found that teens with anxiety disorders were not more likely than those without anxiety disorders to become heavy smokers as young adults. This adds to other research implicating cigarette use as a possible cause-rather than a result-of problems with anxiety and depression.
When researchers tracked nearly 700 adolescents into early adulthood, they found that generalized anxiety disorder, panick attacks, and agoraphobia (fear of public places) were much more common in those who had smoked heavily as teens. These findings, published in the Journal of the American Association, came on the heels of a study in the journal Pediatrics suggesting that smoking may be a cause of teen depression. The authors of both studies say that nicotine may have an adverse effect on the central nervous system.
