Why? What about F-1 style shifters?:) I thinks some sports cars are better off as automatics. Try nailing a Viper into 6th gear while trying to adjust the radio as well.
The only thing that keeps me from regetting the sequential transmission in my M3 is the knowledge that I will most likely end up building it out as a race car within a few years. It's great at the rev limiter, but not so great everywhere else.
...that said, much as automatic Corvettes pain me, they do increase sales to the point where the cars become viable economic propositions. So long as a real transmission is AVAILABLE, I'm ok with it. (Plus, one thing people are finding is that sometimes it's a LOT easier to pick up a cherry automatic and convert it to three pedals.)
This Jeep Liberty is the first automatic I have owned since my first car...WAY WAY back in the day.
I love shifting, but when I had the 1984 & 1985 Ford Mustang GT's...OMG I wore out a few clutches...They just didn't build a big enough clutch and instead used the same one for the 5.0 that they used on the 2.3 (or whatever smaller engine they had). The best shifting was in my 1986 Toyota MR2 and the 1998 VW Jetta...They had the best feel and quickest, surest shifts.

This coming from the guy whose closest toy to being an automatic is his snowmobile.
