Mar. 3rd, 2005 08:50 pmMy supervisor had a chat with me today.
I was back in the cleanroom, well, cleaning parts.
He was in one of the other rooms working on something else with the ehad of the cleanroom.
He stopped by to get my opinion, I'm assuming anyway, on the status of Jim, the guy that's in charge of the deformable mirror project that we're doing for LLNL/NIF. He asked if he was ready to clean parts on his own-no. He asked how the assembly was going-I told him that it depends on the day...sometimes he has half an idea of what he's doing, sometimes he has no clue weather it's his ass or a hole in the wall. It's really frustrating.
My super mentioned that he talked to Jim's old super, Jim, about Jim's 'abilities'. Jim has worked with Jim for quite a while now, and mentioned that he's seen a gradual decline in what seems to be Jim's mental health so to speak. My super and Jim think that Jim might have an early onset of alsheimers. It's kind of sad actually. Jim just seems to get totally lost at times. At first I thought it was just a learning curve thing...butit's been over 2 months, almost 3 months now, and he still doesn't know what he's doing.
I'm repeating myself now, so I'll just stop while I'm ahead. That and all the Jims probably confused the hell out of you. lol. I know who I'm talking about, you should too!

Date: 2005-03-04 04:48 am (UTC)How to approach an individual with issues like this is debateable. But, I would hope that we live in a world where someone doesn't get the boot, without discovering what is going on. I may one day have to face some issues such as this if my health declines and It quite honestly scares the crap out of me.

Date: 2005-03-04 01:01 pm (UTC)I highly doubt they'd fire him. They'd just find less sensitive things for him to do. That's basically what they've already done. He used to be in charge of one of our coating chambers, but (we've never gotten the full story behind the change) we're assuming he got 'demoted' because of his lack of mental aptitude. He's just insanely scatterbrained. At least while he's doing the DM work, there's someone working with him to sort of follow behind him and clean things up. The biggest problem is that I just don't have time to babysit him.
I don't know why I see it as my responsibility to do so, but I do. I've been on this project essentially since I've been here (almost 4 years), and I've been on this longer than anyone in our group other than my surpervisor. I took it as a slap in the face when they put him in charge, but resorted to seeing it as me being too busy to manage a full project, but now I'm questioning that view.
