My cousin is getting his Eagle Badge on Saturday, and I've been asked to take part in the ceremony. Most of you know, I'm an Eagle, and I take it quite seriously, and I understand the importance of the ceremony. My aunt called my dad on Sunday to get help because the scoutmaster isn't giving her much help in planning and coordinating the ceremony, and since my dad has done quite a few (on the order of 4 or 5 around the time I got mine), he had some advice. BUT, because she's not getting much help, she doesn't fully know what needs to be done. It's essentially been left up to me to find what needs to be said (it's mostly a standard thing, but there are many, many variations of the Eagle Charge). I start looking, and I feel fine, but I get to reading through the ceremonies looking for a good script, and I find myself getting nervous, and my hands get cold (my standard reaction when I'm nervous). I can't help but think back to my ceremony, and how I felt that day, and how I remember so much of it, 11 years later.
I keep thinking about how I want to present it, and how I want to sound. I want to verbalize the importance and seriousness of the whole thing, while not being over-the-top about it. The worst part is that I can plan ahead all I want because it all goes out the window when I get up in front of people to speak.
Ah well.
